Text and photos: Katja Bartz
To mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), the Alte Nationalgalerie is presenting the first major exhibition on the work of the most important painter of German Romanticism.
The VBKI provided the extraordinary opportunity to experience the exhibition as part of a private tour after the museum had closed.
The tour began with an explanation of the Romantic era. The art historian who accompanied the group impressively conveyed the philosophical and artistic principles of this period and explained how Friedrich's works reflect the emotional and spiritual dimensions of nature. This introduction created a sound basis for understanding the works of art on display.
The absolute highlight of the tour was viewing the pair of paintings "The Monk by the Sea" and "The Abbey in the Oak Forest". These two paintings, which are often exhibited together, impressively demonstrated Friedrich's ability to convey deep spiritual and existential themes through landscape depictions.
The discussion of other works such as "Kreidefelsen auf Rügen" was also impressive. The participants learned interesting anecdotes about Friedrich's life and his inspirations, which made the works seem even more vivid. The personal atmosphere of the private tour allowed visitors to ask questions and delve deeper into the subject matter.
The feedback from the participants was consistently positive. Many were enthusiastic about the intensive and personal experience offered by the private tour. The opportunity to experience Caspar David Friedrich's works in such an intimate setting was greatly appreciated by everyone. The combination of expert guidance, in-depth information and exclusive insights made this visit an unforgettable experience.
