Also honored - the galleries NADAN and NOME

The VBKI prize winner BERLINER GALERIEN 2024 has been announced! In recognition of the exhibition "STRG-Z" by Berlin artist Emma Adler, Galerie Anton Janizewski will receive this year's Berlin Gallery Prize, which is endowed with 10,000 euros.

In addition to the prize winner from Mitte, the galleries NADAN from Schöneberg and NOME from Tiergarten were also honored at the POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair in mid-September. Both received prize money of 2,500 euros each. All three galleries were nominated for this year's shortlist by a jury of experts at the beginning of July. The submitted exhibition concept, the realized exhibition and the overall appearance of the galleries were evaluated.

VBKI Managing Director Ute Weiland and the Chairman of the Berlin Galleries Association Werner Tammen thanked the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises for its generous and continuous support of the VBKI BERLIN GALLERIES Prize.

VBKI Managing Director Ute Weiland said: "Art and culture are key location and economic factors for Berlin. Galleries are indispensable as a bridge between art production and the art market. With our prize, we want to contribute to recognizing this important role and making it more visible.

Michael Biel, State Secretary in the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises: "Berlin's galleries are at the heart of a vibrant art scene and an active art market. They not only attract local visitors, but also international guests in search of new perspectives and fresh ideas. This networking strengthens the local art scene and positions Berlin as a major player on the global art market. My administration supports VBKI-Preis BERLINER GALERIEN in recognition of the dedicated work of the galleries in this city."

In her subsequent laudatory speech, Dr. Maike Steinkamp, art historian and curator at the Neue Nationalgalerie - Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, paid tribute to this year's award winner: "Galerie Janizewski convinced us with its socio-political aspirations, which it has impressively implemented with the exhibition 'Strg-Z' by artist Emma Adler. In her multimedia installations, Adler shows the entanglement of virtual and physical worlds, as well as the penetration of fascist discourses and deep fakes into the visual worlds of everyday life. It is certainly a risk to show such expansive, political art in the current art market. In view of the current political developments, it seems all the more important to us to offer critical artistic positions a platform and a reference space in the gallery programs - even if they do not correspond to the usual market format."

Berlin galleries with a minimum of three and a maximum of fifteen years in business that are active on the market as so-called first galleries and thus guarantee the infrastructure of the Berlin primary market, i.e. the trade in artworks directly from the studios, were eligible to apply for VBKI-Preis BERLINER GALERIEN .

The aim of the prize, which was launched by the VBKI and lvbg in 2017, is to raise public awareness of the importance of the galleries' work in promoting artists and their entrepreneurial commitment and to strengthen Berlin as an art market location through this impulse. The VBKI-Preis BERLINER GALERIEN was an official program item of the BERLIN ART WEEK 2024.

The 2024 expert jury consists of: Prof. Dr. Stephan Frucht, Artistic Director of the Siemens Arts Program, Chairman of the VBKI Cultural Committee, conductor; Kito Nedo, author and art critic; Anne Schwanz, owner of the OFFICE IMPART Gallery (together with Johanna Neuschäffer), winner of the VBKI Prize BERLINER GALERIEN 2023; Dr. Maike Steinkamp, art historian and curator at the Neue Nationalgalerie - Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
