Drones – here to stay
Drones have long been more than just a technical topic of the future—they are reality. With this clear insight, VBKI DIGITAL and Digitalagentur Berlin (DAB) opened a digital webinar on January 21, 2026, dedicated to the security-related challenges posed by drone technology.
The focus was on classifying drones as a potential security risk for companies. Frank Wernecke, CEO of DroneMasters, made it clear that even though drones are currently receiving less media attention, they continue to pose a serious threat—precisely because they are technically difficult to detect and relatively easy to use.
A key takeaway from the webinar was that just because a drone is not visible, it does not mean that there is no drone present. Different designs, applications, and degrees of effectiveness make reliable detection considerably more difficult. Even military actors do not yet have comprehensive, reliable defense mechanisms at their disposal.
Particularly striking was the point that drones are inexpensive, easy to obtain, and highly effective as tools for criminal activity. While companies often think of security concepts in two dimensions—on the ground—airspace opens up a third dimension that has often been neglected until now.
Frank Wernecke went on to highlight various threat scenarios and types of perpetrators, provided advice on how to behave correctly when a drone is sighted, and showed how companies can gradually develop a viable security concept for dealing with drones. It became clear that a holistic security strategy must consistently take airspace into account.
The event concluded with an open Q&A session moderated by Steven Lewandowski, member of the VBKI DIGITAL committee. The lively exchange demonstrated the participants' keen interest and the high practical relevance of the topic.
We would like to thank Frank Wernecke for his insightful and practical analysis, Steven Lewandowski for his expert moderation, and Digitalagentur Berlin (DAB) for their trust and cooperation.
