10 measures to make Berlin the health capital of Europe
An excellent research landscape, renowned clinics, an innovative start-up scene, a dynamic (pharmaceutical) economy and a growing international community: Berlin has the best prerequisites for making a name for itself as the healthcare capital of Europe. However, we believe that coordinated and targeted action is required for this potential to unfold its full effect. Our Health Committee has drawn up a 10-point action plan that describes important steps on the way to becoming a European health capital.
Dr. Harald Hasselmann, Co-Chairman of the VBKI Health Committee: "Our city has every opportunity to establish itself as a leading healthcare metropolis in Europe and to operate on a par with top international locations such as Boston - but we must not rest on our laurels. We need more speed, more coordination and more visibility. With our action plan, we want to bring together politics, business and science in order to make consistent use of the opportunities that arise. It is crucial that we take action now - in a determined, coordinated and future-oriented manner."

The proposed measures include the development of a joint Strategy 2030 with clear objectives and responsibilities, the introduction of fast and standardized approval procedures, new financing channels such as a "Health Innovation Campus" with its own capital market segment, the targeted expansion of infrastructure and centers of excellence as well as a specialist offensive with simplified recognition procedures and more international training opportunities. In addition, there is the development of a user-friendly digital health data infrastructure, the promotion of the practical use of artificial intelligence, sustainable investments according to ESG criteria and international location marketing that positions Berlin as the "Health Capital of Europe".

To accompany the action plan, the committee has also launched the "Berlin Health Map" project. The digital map lists almost 100 locations in Berlin's healthcare landscape - care centers, research facilities, pharmaceutical companies, start-ups - and thus provides an overview of the diversity and depth of the capital region as a healthcare location. The map can be expanded and will be constantly updated.
